Every now and again I will get the opportunity to document some really fantastic events. On Thursday 24th September I was asked if I would bring along my camera to document the awards ceremony evening for Wigan’s Royal British Legion at the Wigan Sea Cadet’s unit. I was honored to be asked and I couldn’t wait to be part of it and to start snapping away.
For those who may not know, I am a veteran of the Armed Forces myself after I left the Royal marines in 2009 to start my career as a professional wedding photographer. I am now a volunteer down at my local Wigan Sea Cadet unit offering my time to the kids that turn up to learn everything there is to know about the Cadet force and to generally just have fun. The organisation means a great deal to me as I used to be a Sea Cadet myself when I lived in Birmingham as a boy. I had such a fantastic time and personally it gave me a great advantage when applying to join the Royal Marines.
The evening was held to acknowledge the efforts made by those who have given up their time to help raise funds towards the poppy appeal. As you most likely will be aware the poppy appeal is an annual event which raises as much money as possible which in turn then goes towards helping members and veterans of the British Armed Forces their families and dependents. The Royal British Legion is a charity run organisation which provide financial, social and emotional support to anyone who has served and are serving in the British Armed Forces.
It was a great evening which even had a special appearance from Dave Guest who is a journalist, chief reporter, and occasional presenter for BBC North West tonight. He was on hand to present the awards to those hard working people who gave up their time towards such a great cause. I also can’t forget the infamous ‘Monty Dogge’ and ‘Cookie Bear’ who are Newfoundland’s and are one of the only animals to represent The Royal British Legion nationally.
It was a real privilege and I enjoyed myself very much 🙂
Please spare what you can this year and help make it a year to remember.
